2017 BMC Speedfox 02 SLX/XT Bike
When you look at the BMC Speedfox 02, you’re looking at the front triangle of the Speedfox 01, with a rear triangle of formed, welded, triple-butted aluminum. It raises the weight, improves durability and drops cost.
Joining the two triangles is a sophisticated linkage system, BMC's Advanced Pivot System, which keeps the suspension active and responding to the trail inputs no matter whether or not you're pedaling, nor how hard. The linkages are machined aluminum and pivoting on oversized bearings. The pivots are smooth to make sure nothing locks up in stiction, and the size means there’s no lateral slop when new, and none down the trail. The shock is Fox’s Float DPS, with three-position remote damper. Locked, controlled, and loose are easy to switch on the fly. 130mm of squish front and rear. Frame weight goes up to 2790g: a worthwhile compromise to get the performance gains provided.
With the rear suspension, there’s a built-in sag indicator on the swingarm. It is as easy to adjust as eyeballing and dialing.
The geometry takes its shape from BMC employing their Big Wheel Concept and tweaking it for trail riding. In this case, trail means everything from cross-country to all mountain, a bike that really gets at the heart of what it means to just go out and ride what you find. It is designed to be scooty and stable, adept at the slow and fast. This is a bike for the person who doesn’t need to race, but could dabble, who likes to ride hard up and down the mountain, but doesn’t want to rely on lifts. It’s an all trails are open kind of bike.
Because everyone wants their bike to really roll, BMC employs their BWC to make 29er wheels come to life. BWC is Big Wheel Concept, and it’s how BMC took the bigger hoops and make the resulting bike as agile as a 26er. Long top tube, slack head angle, low bottom bracket, short stays keep you in control of the front wheel, the center of gravity low and the rear wheel tucked in behind.
As it typical of BMC, there are lots of smart built-ins. The head tube is designed for 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” steerer tubes. There’s a chain guide over the BB92 bottom bracket shell, and an anti chainsuck plate on the right chainstay. There’s a under the chainstay chain guide as well and a BMC-designed chain-slap protector as well. The seat clamp comes with, as does the 142x12mm rear axle. They’ve designed cable routing to be internal for derailleurs, brake, and seatpost. They’ve deployed their Natural-Born postmounts for the brake, with replaceable threaded inserts and accommodating 180mm to 203mm rotors.
The BMC Speedfox 02 balances performance and price so you can find the balance of exhilaration and utility out on the trail.
